Today, my wife and I were traveling home from the doctor's office in Fremont, CA. One of the sometimes unexpected joys of Life With Rachael is the unplanned bathroom breaks. Sometimes the urgency of the matter is paramount.
Today was one of those days.
We were just going by the turnoff to San Juan Bautista, and I figured there'd surely be a bathroom there. We came into town and pulled into the first parking lot we could find.
We were in luck.
There was a Pizza Factory right there.
Rachael's door was open before the truck was fully finished moving. We got out.
I looked up at the sign and said, "Uh, Oh".
"What?", Rachael said.
"It looks like we can't use the bathroom." Right on the front door was a sign that said their bathrooms were for customers only.
Rachael could not wait, so we went in.
At the counter, I said that I guess I'd buy a soda so we could be customers in order to qualify for the bathroom usage program they have in place. The man behind the counter had every opportunity to tell me it was not a big deal and to go ahead and use the restroom.
He told me no such thing.
He charged me $2.25 for a 32 oz. soda. Now, I'm sure in his mind, he's thinking 'I just made $2.25 I normally would not have made if I just let anyone use my bathrooms.'
However, in reality, the price tag will be far greater than the small payday.
I refuse to patronize a place that chooses to be this stingy with their restrooms. Especially when it's in a place like San Juan Bautista. It's not like the bathrooms are going to get overrun with the huge population or anything.
Now this may just be my pet peeve, but I'm guessing I'm not the only one.
Let me know what you think. Do you agree with me, or no? Should a business force you to buy something just to use their bathroom? What if you're a regular customer but not buying anything this time? I know that most fast food places place no requirements on you, and they seem to be doing fine.
Whatever you think, at least you now know. You can plan your bathroom (and eating) stops accordingly.
Here's the $2.25 cup of soda I had to buy as an admission price to the restroom.
